Queensland forms the
north-east corner of the Australian continent and , with an area
of 1.8 million square kilometres, is the country’s
second-largest state. To put Queensland in perspective, it’s
more than seven times the size of the United Kingdom, more than
four and half time the size of Japan, around six and half times
the size of New Zealand, more than five times the size of Texas.
The state has much to offer, from the tropical islands of the
Great Barrier Reef to the wide open spaces of the Outback, from
lush World Heritage-listed rainforest to the wetlands of the
Gulf, and from the mountains that trace the length of the coast
to the open plains, fields and cattle stations.
The
state’s tropical rainforests,
offer spectacular vistas of waterfalls and lush vegetation.
The World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef extends along the
coastline for 2,000 kilometres, making it the greatest and most
spectacular expanse of living coral reef on earth.

Climate
One of the major attractions of Queensland is its climate, with
just over half the state lying in the tropical zone and the
remainder in the temperate zone.
The
average maximum temperature is 25.2 C and the average minimum
15.7 C. It is truly the Sunshine State, with the gateway cities
of Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville enjoying an average of 300
days of sunshine a year.

Population
The State’s population passed 3.8 million in 2003 (at the time
of the last Census). The relatively densely populated south-east
corner of Queensland contains over two-thirds of the State’s
total population.
Cairns city, in Tropical North Queensland, is the State’s
northern-most regional centre, 1800km north of Brisbane, and has
a population of over 120,000 within the city’s boundaries.
Tourism Industry
On average, the state of Queensland attracts 7.8 million visitors and 39
million visitor nights. Total tourism expenditure is valued at
around $5.4 billion for visitors who stay in commercial
accommodation.
The state attracts more than 60 per cent of all international
visitors to Australia - about 1.5 million overseas visitors each
year.
